This problem comes from Terence Tao’s blog. The solution appears in the comment thread there. Somewhere midway down I attempt to answer the relativity question, but make a calculational error, which Tao corrects later down.
I like this question partly because it’s cute, but especially because one of the finest mathematicians in the world said something nice about me (or my internet moniker, anyway) in the process of thinking about it.
